When Jimmy Buffett wrote that now famous song “Cheese Burgers in Paradise” he was actually writing about nutrition. The first part goes like this:

“Tried to amend my carnivorous habits. Made it nearly seventy days, Losin weight without speed, eatinʼ sunflower seeds Drinkinʼ lots of carrot juice and soakinʼ up rays But at night I’d have these wonderful dreams Some kind of sensuous treat Not zucchini, fettuccini or bulgur wheat But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat.”

If you are enrolled in a senior health you may qualify for Medical Nutrition Therapy. Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services prescribed by a doctor for people with diabetes or kidney disease. This benefit includes:

  • An initial assessment of nutrition and lifestyle assessment
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Information regarding managing lifestyle factors that affect diet
  • Follow-up visits to monitor progress managing diet

Your senior health plan covers 3 hours of one-on-one counseling services the first year, and 2 hours each year after that. A doctor must prescribe these services and renew their referral yearly if you need treatment into another calendar year. These services may be obtained by a registered dietitian or a Medicare-approved nutrition professional.

For folks not on a senior health plan some insurance carriers offer savings for their clients that have an individual family plan. For Example, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida has a discount program called “Blue365”. Even if you have a high deductible health plan you would not need to meet the deductible to take advantage of the savings.
