The first day that you can enroll in an insurance plan for 2016 through Health Insurance Marketplace is November 1, 2015. Your coverage can begin as soon as January 1, 2016. Coverage for the 2016 year starts for those who enroll or change plans by December 15. Open enrollment will end on January 31 2016.
Before you enroll for coverage, you should review insurance plans and prices to see if you will save on health insurance coverage. You will also want to learn how to estimate your income. Sign up for email and text message reminders so that you don’t miss important health coverage information. You can also contact the Health Insurance Marketplace Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get any of your questions answered.
Once you have enrolled in a plan, you must pay your first premium to the insurance company directly and not the Health Insurance Marketplace. Payments are handled differently by insurance companies so be sure to follow the directions about how and when to make the premium payment.
If you are confused about whether or not you have enrolled, you can log into your HealCare.gov account and select application. You should see a summary of your coverage on the and click on the “My applications & Coverage” page to find more details about your enrollment. You can also call your insurance company who can confirm whether you have enrolled and if you have paid your first month’s premium.
You may change plans at any time during the open enrollment period. Changing plans outside of open enrollment is allowed only if you have a life event that qualifies you for a special enrollment period. Generally you have about 60 days from the occurrence of the life event in which you can change to a new plan.
